Based on those documented factors, the Dell U2725QE is our hub-monitor pick, while the ASUS PA279CRV is a simpler 60Hz path. BenQ’s RD280UG adds a taller 3:2 canvas. The LG 27UQ850-W is included only as a legacy option because LG marks it discontinued.
How the four options differ
The product comparison separates panel density from the features wrapped around it. Dell is the most complete docking choice, ASUS is the conventional 27-inch 60Hz choice, BenQ changes the shape of the workspace, and LG is a discontinued model that only makes sense under a favorable residual-stock deal. None of those positions rests on an undocumented claim that one screen will look sharpest to every reader.
What “text clarity” actually asks you to compare
Pixel density is the useful starting point because it describes how tightly the pixels are packed, but it is not the finish line. The three current models here sit within one pixel per inch of each other. At that point, the operating system’s scaling behavior, the application’s font rendering, the panel’s surface, the signal format, and your viewing distance can matter more than a one-PPI specification difference.
Scaling is especially important on a 27-inch 4K display. Running every interface element at its smallest native size may technically show more information, yet leave menus and labels uncomfortably small. Increasing Windows or macOS scaling makes interface elements larger while preserving the underlying high-density rendering. The right setting is the one that keeps your everyday applications readable without creating blurry behavior in a legacy app. This is why a return-window evaluation should include the software you actually use, not only a browser test page.
Signal integrity is another separate question. A monitor cannot render the intended desktop text if a dock, adapter, or cable forces a lower resolution, reduced refresh rate, or chroma-subsampled output. Confirm the target mode in both the operating-system display panel and the monitor’s own information screen. If the text looks unexpectedly colored or smeared at edges, compare a direct connection with the dock removed before blaming the panel.

Finally, “eye comfort” labels require restraint. An anti-glare surface can control reflections in a bright room, but a stronger matte treatment can look grainier to some people. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and pointer motion look smoother, but it does not establish a medical outcome. Certifications should be read within their published scope, not converted into a promise about fatigue, headaches, or vision.
Our all-around work-monitor pick: Dell U2725QE
Dell combines 163 pixels per inch with 120Hz refresh, a low-reflectance anti-glare coating, and a substantial dock. That makes the U2725QE attractive when a laptop desk would otherwise need a separate Thunderbolt hub. The official US page lists DisplayPort input and output, HDMI, Thunderbolt 4 upstream with up to 140W EPR, downstream Thunderbolt, KVM functions, USB, and 2.5GbE.
RTINGS’ exact-model review provides independent text-clarity context for the Dell. Text appearance still depends on operating-system scaling, font rendering, viewing distance, and whether the source preserves full chroma.
The Dell’s value calculation should therefore begin with the devices that would otherwise sit beside it. If you need Ethernet, laptop charging, several USB connections, a second display output, and switching between computers, the built-in hub can replace real desk hardware. If your desktop already has those connections, you are paying for integration rather than a denser panel. Also verify that the laptop accepts the advertised charging path; the monitor’s maximum power delivery does not mean every host will negotiate or need that amount.

A simpler 27-inch option: ASUS PA279CRV
The PA279CRV keeps the same 27-inch 3840x2160 and 163 PPI density while stepping down to 60Hz. It provides 96W USB-C power, DisplayPort input and output, two HDMI inputs, and a USB hub. ASUS lists a 36-month US warranty and a product-security-update period ending December 31, 2026.
ASUS also lists Calman Verified, TÜV, TCO, EPEAT, and ENERGY STAR credentials. Those records are useful for their defined certification scopes; they do not prove that text is sharper, that every user will feel less fatigue, or that the backlight has no measurable modulation in every mode.
The PA279CRV is the cleaner comparison for a buyer who does not need Dell’s networking and high-power dock. Its DisplayPort output can matter in a supported multi-monitor chain, but a chain’s available resolution and refresh depend on the source and connection path. Check that entire path before counting a single cable as a guaranteed dual-monitor solution. The published security date is also unusually concrete; buyers planning a long service life should recheck ASUS’s page rather than assume that date has been extended.

A taller coding canvas: BenQ RD280UG
The RD280UG is not a standard 16:9 4K monitor. Its 3840x2560 resolution and 3:2 shape add vertical pixels, which can reduce scrolling in code, documents, and browser work. BenQ specifies 164 PPI, 120Hz, a Nano Matte surface, and 90W USB-C power.
That shape is the decision, not a generic claim that it is clearer. Check whether your desk, monitor arm, screen-sharing workflow, and preferred scaling support the taller panel. BenQ has published firmware notes addressing USB-C and USB-hub stability, but it has not published a fixed support end date.
The 3:2 panel can show more vertical content than a similarly wide 16:9 display, but it also changes familiar assumptions. A screen share may be letterboxed for colleagues on conventional displays, and a monitor arm must accommodate the physical panel rather than just its diagonal number. If your work alternates between long documents and standard 16:9 video, decide which activity deserves priority. The RD280UG is a format choice first and a collection of “coding” modes second.

LG 27UQ850-W: legacy only
LG’s US page marks the 27UQ850-W discontinued. The model still offers a useful 27-inch 4K IPS Black panel, 90W USB-C, and hardware calibration, and LG’s support page lists software updates. Neither fact makes it a current recommendation.
Consider it only when the listing clearly identifies US suffix 27UQ850-W.AUS, the return policy is strong, and the price reflects discontinued status. Do not substitute the newer 27UQ850V-W or a different regional suffix without rechecking specifications.
Residual inventory creates risks that a spec sheet does not show: the seller may use an abbreviated title, the warranty clock may be unclear, or the delivered regional suffix may differ. Save the listing and invoice, inspect the model label immediately, and confirm who handles a defective-on-arrival unit. A discontinued monitor can still be functional, but it should not win merely because an old review compared it favorably with products from its original release period.
How to choose for readable text
- At 27 to 28 inches, these displays cluster around 163 to 164 PPI. The practical differences are shape, coating, refresh, scaling, and connectivity.
- Plan to test 125%, 150%, and 175% scaling with your actual applications. Some legacy Windows tools handle fractional scaling poorly.
- Confirm full RGB or 4:4:4 output at the target resolution and refresh rate. A bandwidth-limited dock or cable can undermine desktop text.
- Treat matte coatings as a tradeoff: they reduce reflections but can change perceived grain or crispness.
- Buy from a seller with a workable pixel-defect and return policy. Manufacturer warranty rules and zero-bright-dot terms are model- and region-specific.
Choose the connection before the monitor
Write down the exact computer, port, dock, and second-display plan. A USB-C connector alone does not establish video bandwidth, charging, or daisy-chain support. Mac and Windows systems can also handle multi-display transport differently. For a laptop that moves daily, Dell’s integrated dock may justify its complexity. For a stationary computer with ample ports, ASUS may cover the display need without duplicating other hardware. BenQ belongs on the shortlist when vertical workspace is the specific reason to change screens.
Budget for the complete desk
Compare total ownership cost, not only the monitor price. The relevant total may include a certified cable, monitor arm, separate dock, Ethernet adapter, or replacement laptop charger. Conversely, do not assign savings to an integrated feature you will never use. Warranty duration, published firmware, and the ease of identifying the exact regional model also affect the cost of keeping the screen in service.
Use the return period as a compatibility check
Start with a direct cable and the monitor’s native resolution. Confirm the expected refresh rate, then test the scaling levels that make sense for your viewing distance. Open the applications where you spend the most time, including any legacy tools. Read light and dark text, scroll, and check fine UI elements under normal room lighting. Only then add the dock, KVM, second computer, or monitor arm one variable at a time. This is a compatibility evaluation, not a claim that the unit has undergone our own lab testing.
If something looks wrong, record the current resolution, refresh rate, scaling percentage, connection, and application. That information makes troubleshooting more useful than changing several monitor presets at once. It also helps distinguish an app-rendering problem from a connection problem or a panel characteristic.
Who should buy which monitor
Choose the Dell UltraSharp U2725QE when one-cable laptop docking, Ethernet, KVM switching, and 120Hz are features you can name a use for. Choose the ASUS ProArt PA279CRV when you want the standard 27-inch 4K format, substantial USB-C charging, and a documented US warranty without paying for the Dell’s full hub. Choose the BenQ RD280UG when the 3:2 canvas is itself the reason for the purchase and your desk and sharing workflow accommodate it. Treat the LG 27UQ850-W as a seller- and price-dependent legacy purchase, not a coequal current-model recommendation.
Skip an upgrade altogether if your present display is already comfortable at the required viewing distance and the proposed monitor does not solve a specific density, workspace, reflection, or connectivity problem. A 4K badge cannot fix a poorly behaving application, an incorrect signal path, or a desk that forces the screen too far away.
Evidence boundary
No one lab currently covers all four exact models with the same public text-clarity, subpixel, chroma, PWM, coating, and uniformity protocol. RTINGS covers the Dell and ASUS; PCWorld covers the ASUS and BenQ across different test eras; a current exact LG comparison was not found. This article therefore compares documented fit and connectivity rather than declaring a measured text-clarity winner. It makes no eye-health claim.
